NYFAA NICET Training May 17th and 18th

The Memorandum of Understanding and application for the new FDNY S-97 Certificate of Fitness “Fire Alarm Systems Testing, Inspection, and Service Technician ” is now available on the FDNY website in the Certificate of Fitness area. READ the Memorandum of Understanding. The new COF will work the same way as the “Approved Company Smoke Detector Certificate of Operation ” COF does.

Within the next eighteen months, all technicians servicing fire alarms must be carded.

An approved company principal holding a NICET level II or above (as described in the Memorandum) will be required to obtain an S97 COF to certify himself and the company. Once the Company has been approved, technicians will then be required to be carded as well.

For those techs who only clean and test smoke detectors, the W26 is still sufficient.

The S-97 technician card will be linked to that company which provides proof of employment for the applicant, similar to the smoke detector card. Individuals will not be eligible for an S-97.

Once a company principal has been carded, technicians must apply for the S-97 COF. If a technician applies who already is certified NICET Level II or above, he/she will receive an S-97 COF linked to the company. If a technician applies who is not NICET certified, the tech will either have to complete NICET Level II or pass an FDNY exam (to be developed within the next few months) within eighteen months after issuance to renew the COF.

An applicant not providing proof of employment from an approved company will not be carded by the FDNY.

This basis for this card is the requirement in the new fire code requiring that building owners maintain their fire alarm systems in accordance with NFPA 72. The FDNY has agreed to cease writing violations for “Technicians not NICET/ or Factory Trained”, allowing for the industry to get their employees carded. Going forward, when a technician performs a test and inspection or services a system in a building , he/she will be signing the log book with their card number.

The NYFAA is scheduling NICET training for May for those who may be interested. Karen has the list of those who previously responded. We expect to keep the fee the same as last year. Applications will be emailed out before the week’s end.

Please read the memorandum of understanding before sending questions.

If there any questions, please email them to “the office” info@nyfaa.org
